Drs. Lambert, Camacho-Rivera, Boutin-Foster and Riley published an article in the journal, Cell, titled, “Ending Domestic Helicopter Research.” The commentary examines the detrimental effects of domestic helicopter research.

​A new study by researchers from the STAR Program (Drs. Hirshfield, Diaz and Thomas) in AIDS and Behavior titled "Personality Traits and eHealth Study Enrollment Among Racial and Sexual Minoritized Men Living with HIV," analyzes the role of personality traits in HIV study participation among Black and Latinx sexual minority men.

In collaboration with Program Officer Dr. Emanuel Moro from NIA/NIH,

Dr. Rena Orman organized a workshop titled "What Bats can teach us about aging."

Blake Adair Wheeler was appointed as the new DTCI Biotech Incubator

Executive Director. Prior to Downstate, Mr. Adair was Vice President of Business Operations at EpiBone, Inc., a prominent player in regenerative medicine. “Blake’s biotech expertise reinforces our commitment to pioneering life sciences,” said David A. Christini, Ph.D., Senior Vice President for Research.

Neuroscientists Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde were featured on the #1 science podcast on Apple Podcasts, Inner Cosmos with David Eagleman, titled "Why do brains so easily fall for magic tricks?"

Student Awards

Robert F. Furchgott Youth Scholar Award

​

The Robert F. Furchgott Youth Scholar Award in conjunction with the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, identifies a young person who embodies the academic passion that defined Dr. Furchgott. The recipients should also exhibit unassuming kindness toward others, a core of Dr. Furchgott's legacy. Erica Barnet was chosen as the winner for 2024, selected from students in the Health Science Academy and received a cash award of $1,000.

 

 The Robert F. Furchgott Award for Excellence in Research

The Society honors the graduate student whose research is considered most outstanding among the cohort of graduate students who defended (or will soon defend) their thesis in the 12-month interval since the previous year's commencement.  This year's awardee was Craig Kelley.

 

The Robert F. Furchgott Medical Student Research Award

 

To qualify for this award, candidates must be current third- or fourth-year medical students who have conducted basic or clinical research while enrolled at Downstate. The award recipient was selected on the basis of the scientific merit of their research, the student's contribution to and understanding of the project, and the quality of the presentation. This year, Adem Idrizi received first prize. Samuel Gedailovich and Jennifer Wang received Honorable Mentions.​

The Alfred Stracher Student Author Research Award


The Alfred Stracher Student Author Research Award was established to acknowledge students who are actively engaged in research in any masters or doctoral program and whose research project translates to the improvement of human health.
